The USA COMPANIES, over more than 50 years, has created many companies that have added jobs, and benefited publishing, medical, internet, and other business areas.
We have always believed in the importance of giving back. One of our proudest accomplishments was creating two “non-profit” organizations in 1990, the National Association of Nonsmokers, and the National Nonsmoking Foundation.
National Association of Nonsmokers and National Nonsmokers Foundation.
In 1990, the USA Companies founded the National Association of Nonsmokers (“NANS”), and the National Nonsmokers Foundation (Non-profit associations). The organizations were founded to: (1) bring awareness of the hazards of second hand tobacco smoke; and (2) raise funds for lobbying for legislation to protect nonsmokers from second hand tobacco smoke. The organizations merged into another nonsmoking organization.
The USA Companies, and it’s founder, partners and team, have also contributed (both time and contributions) to the Arts, Educational institutions, Medical facilities, and others, trying to achieve the goal of giving back.
NORMAN UNDERSTEIN, FOUNDER
Norman Understein founded and inspired all but two of the USA Companies (20/20 Laser Centers, and Medical Imaging of Baltimore were conceived by a longtime friend and physician). Understein, a 1966 Bradley University graduate with majors in Journalism and Psychology, also served as President of SDX (the Journalism Society), Vice President of TEP fraternity, Student Council member, writer for the Scout newspaper and newscaster for WRBU radio.
In 2016, he received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, after becoming a pilot in 1963 (while a student at Bradley). His early career included an internship with the 1964 Johnson-Humphrey campaign, and advance work for President Johnson. He served on advisory boards, including the AFI-Silver, Mark Twain House & Museum, and continues to serve on the advisory council of Bradley University’s Turner School of Entrepreneurship, mentoring students.
Shortly after his first “job” after graduating college, he came up with the idea of the pocket site zip code directory, which then lead to the other ventures that are part of the USA Companies.
